Chapter 9

It was dusk by the time we reached the old care-home that had been my prison for a short time. The sun was setting behind the red brick that created shadows across the overgrown lawn. Lucian parked his car in the paved area that I suppose used to be a car park for visitors back when it was inhabited by actual people.

“Why does she keep coming here?” I whispered.

His hands gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white. “She visits the graves that are situated at the back of the property.”

“What graves?”

His deep sigh echoed in the small confines of the car, “the graves of all of the babies and children that died after her bite. She would steal them from their parents, care for them for a time; she would treat them like her own.” His gaze grew bleak as he stared across the expanse - I assume - in the direction of the gravesite. “Then she would promise them forever with her, biting them and watching as they begged for death. And then they died in agony.”

“Oh my god. And she buried them all here?”

“Some of them.” He muttered, “some of them she just left…I had to…” His voice broke, his face devastated as he remembered the atrocities that he was forced to see.

“I’m sorry babe. We’ll fix it, OK. For the kids and for their parents. That’s what we’re here for right?”

“That’s what you are here for, I was never able to. I was weak; I spent years cleaning up their messes and burying evidence. I should have done something…”

I reached over in the cramped space and turned his head towards me, forcing him to look at me. “You are not weak!” I ground out through clenched teeth, “you were the one who saved us, remember. It was you who kept the Lycans in line all of these years, imagine how many they would have killed if they were not worried that you would stop them.” He opened his mouth, the denial of my claims evident on his face. So, I did the only thing I could think of to shut him up.

I pinched his lips closed, holding them together so he couldn’t speak. “No speaking against the last surviving blood witch, my word is law. Nod if you understand.” I moved my hand, still squeezing his lips together, up and down, mimicking a nodding motion. “I’m glad that you agree with me.” Humour glittered in his golden eyes as I pecked a kiss across his squished mouth. And though I’m glad that I had removed the sadness from his face, I was also glad that he agreed with everything I said. “OK, let’s go.”

We had to walk around the long way, all the way around the property line so that we came up on her other side, as Lucian stated, we wanted to be down-wind of her so that she didn’t smell us coming. Neither could we speak from this moment on, with their sensitive hearing, she would hear us.
